CHEN Yan Jhen

BACK
CHEN Yan Jhen, received her master’s in Arts Education and Creation from the Department of Arts and Design, National Tsing Hua University, immersed in formal education since she was a child. She worked with the diverse variety of mediums, and started creating the ceramic art since 2010. In the past, she created by drawing the inspiration from the feelings and sensibilities that her friends, family, and the external surroundings generated in her. Recently, she created with the emotions from her daily life, and used the ceramic medium to capture the transient natural phenomena with her feeling of nature and romantic imagination in childhood.
Under the influence of our background and experiences, we tend to view elements in nature, such as plants and insects, as objects, even as inanimate objects, that can be depicted in art. The attention we pay to their mere appearance obscures the inherent value that lies in their pure existence. In man-made environments, we are so often surrounded by artifacts of daily life that utilize motifs from nature as design elements that nature is seen as a mere decorative backdrop to our lives. Nature, however, does not exist to beautify the lives of mankind. Thus, I began exploring the differences between reality and my own imagination.
By capturing snapshots of day to day life using my camera, I uncover the details and subtleties of natural occurrences; by adopting a fresh perspective for the perusal of existing literature, I am able to experience a new sensitivity in comparing and converging my pre-conceptions from before the uncovering process with the differences in understanding gained thereafter. These insights have provided me with subject matter for my creations, which I have given concrete form through ceramics in my effort to preserve short-lived memories through the immortal medium of art.
